More About Jacques Plante and The Goalie Mask:
Goalie masks are a must in the National Hockey League today, but that always wasn't the case. Through the first 40 years of professional hockey (1920's to late 1950's) goalies wore nothing to protect their face. That changed on November 1, 1959 when Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens became the first NHL goalie to wear a mask in a regular-season game. He turned to the mask after a puck broke his nose, forcing him to wear a fiberglass mask he'd used in practice. Plante's successful, consistent use of a contoured mask marked the beginning of modern goalie facial protection in the NHL.
Jacques Plante career as a goaltender lasted from 1947 to 1975 and was considered to be one of the most important innovators in hockey. He played for the Montreal Canadiens from 1953 to 1963; during his tenure, the team won the Stanley Cup six times, including five consecutive wins. In 2017 Plante was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history.
Plante was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978, was chosen as the goaltender of the Canadiens' "dream team" in 1985. The Montreal Canadiens retired Plante's jersey, #1, the following year. Plante ranks seventh among NHL goalies for all-time career wins with 437.
